I’ve never laughed so much in a theatre: “Peter Pan Goes Wrong”

From the very start, the Cornely Drama Society’s production of “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” whisked the audience away on a whimsical journey, leaving everyone in stitches. The pre-show antics, with an extension lead resembling a spaghetti bowl and a mysteriously missing hammer, set the stage for the uproarious performance that unfolded.

The dynamic duo of ‘Chris & Robert,’ played by Jack Michael Stacey and Matthew Howell, brought a contagious energy to the stage as director and co-director (or, as they playfully call it, the sorry assistant director). Their banter and chemistry laid the groundwork for a night filled with belly laughs. When Peter Pan burst onto the stage in a whirlwind of controlled chaos, the comedic brilliance reached new heights.

The recurring theme of ‘it’s not a pantomime’ took an unintentional turn, turning the production into one, much to the delight of the spirited Cardiff audience. Captain Hook’s adept control over the crowd and seamless return to the play’s narrative showcased a level of genius that made the laughter contagious.

The intricately detailed set, complete with technical elements, played a crucial role in enhancing the overall comedic timing. The cast’s invitation of the backstage crew onto the stage at the end added a delightful touch, culminating in a well-deserved standing ovation from an enthusiastic audience. This inclusion not only acknowledged the behind-the-scenes magic but also highlighted the sense of camaraderie that permeated the production.

“Peter Pan Goes Wrong” reminded me of timeless comedic classics like Faulty Towers and Mr Bean where it seamlessly blended slapstick humour and unbridled chaos, immersing the audience in a level of laughter rarely encountered in a theatre. The controlled disorder was a triumph, leaving an indelible mark on the collective memory of those lucky enough to experience its theatrical brilliance. It was truly bonkers, truly brilliant – an unforgettable night of uproarious hilarity!
