Cardiff Wales Airport has announced that Icelandic low-cost carrier, PLAY airlines, is providing a short programme of direct flights between Cardiff and Keflavík, Iceland, this autumn.

It is an excellent boost for Welsh tourism, as people living on the island can visit Wales and experience our world class beaches, coastal paths, castles, golf courses, mountains, and excellent shopping venues.

PLAY airlines also provides connections to key cities in the US and Canada, through its Keflavík hub.

The service also gives our customers in Wales and the south west of England the opportunity to enjoy Iceland’s incredible natural wonders, including waterfalls, geysers, hot springs, glaciers and Northern Lights.

PLAY airlines will start operating two weekly flights on 10 October 2024, for six weeks, which includes the half-term getaway.

The service covers important football fixtures, with flights timed conveniently, allowing fans to experience what both nations offer before and after the
following games:
▪ Iceland v Wales on 11 October
▪ Wales v Iceland on 19 November

PLAY airlines also offers a free stopover in Iceland on its North American connections, enabling customers to visit two countries in one trip.

Flights can be booked and stopover details can be found at www.flyplay.com

The service will be operated by Airbus A320neos, one of the world’s most environmentally friendly aircraft, which delivers 20% fuel savings and CO2 reductions, compared to previous Airbus aircraft.

Lee Smith, Head of Business Development at Cardiff Wales Airport, said:

“It’s really exciting that PLAY airlines has chosen to link Cardiff with its Icelandic hub,
meaning customers can now enjoy easy, low-cost connectivity between Wales, Iceland, the US and Canada. I’m really pleased there’ll be more flights at our national airport this year, which will allow more tourists to visit Wales. The whole airport team is looking forward to welcoming PLAY airlines to Cardiff this October.”

Einar Örn Ólafsson, CEO of PLAY airlines, said:

“We’re thrilled to introduce PLAY’s service to Cardiff. It’s a city rich in culture and vibrancy, perfect for our expanding network. This new route enhances connectivity between two incredible destinations, and we can’t wait to welcome passengers aboard.”
