It was opened by Vikki Howells MS for Cynon Valley in April 2023 following a full renovation and refurbishment by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust which began in November 2022. Michelle Rowson-Woods, Head of Operations – Wales for the Coalfields Regeneration Trust said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to be on the shortlist for the RICS Awards in Wales for the Community Benefit category.

We’d like to thank our partners in Welsh Government, UK Government, the Pen y Cymoedd Windfarm Community Fund, General Dynamics UK and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council as we could not have brought the building back to use without them.

CRT Hwb Cana has been open for less than a year and has already been embraced by the fantastic community in Penywaun – we hope people in Penywaun will keep their fingers crossed for us when the results are revealed!”
