Cynon Valley MP Beth Winter today claimed that the Conservative Government are ‘happy for the cost-of-living crisis to continue’ as she published a report into Cost-of-Living crisis in Cynon Valley.

The new report finds that 90% of people in Cynon Valley feel worse-off than they did at this time last year, and 81% of people reported that their financial situation is impacting on their mental health.

The report also found that more than a third of people have had to skip meals in the last year and 48% of people have had to borrow money.

In the year ahead, 72% are expecting to cut down on using the heating and 40% anticipate not putting the heating on at all.

Ahead of speaking today at the TUC conference in Llandudno, the Labour MP for the Cynon Valley said, ‘everyone should have enough money to pay their bills. Everyone should have enough to eat, and to live with dignity. There is more than enough wealth in this country to secure us those basic rights.’

‘People are suffering, and the Tory Government are not lifting a finger to do anything about it.’

‘I can only conclude that this Conservative Government are happy for this cost-of-living crisis to continue. I can only conclude that they are happy to see working class people suffer and struggle. Let’s call this what it is. Class war.’

‘We need emergency measures to raise incomes and control prices. We also need urgent action to better distribute the enormous wealth in this country.’

Winter called for everybody to attend the Trades Union Council’s ‘Demand Better’ rally in London on June 18th.

‘Working class people deserve better. I look forward to joining the TUC demonstration on 18 June in London and I urge you to join me there.’
