Latest phase of wall repairs along Berw Road to rectify storm damage

Written by on 8th May 2024

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will begin its latest phase of repairs to the next section of the river wall located along Berw Road in Pontypridd. A footway closure is needed next to the wall, but two-way traffic flow will be maintained for road users.

The next section of the wall to be repaired is 230-metres in length, at a location south-west of Berw Road Field and Lewis Terrace. The Council’s appointed contractor Hammonds Ltd will start work from Monday, May 13.

The scheme will carry out remedial repairs to the masonry wall – including removal of intrusive vegetation and repointing areas of the structure. Some sections will need to be rebuilt, taking down existing copings and reinstating them where needed. The scheme is due for completion around the end of summer 2024, and is funded by Welsh Government’s programme of Storm Dennis repairs.

The contractor will work on 30-metre sections of the wall at a time, installing and relocating scaffolding as progress is made. An area of Council-owned land opposite number 28 Berw Road will be utilised for the site compound.

The footway next to the wall will need to close, limited to 30-metre sections at a time, which will correspond with the work location as it changes. Temporary pedestrian crossing points will be provided and will be clearly signposted.

The majority of the scheme can be carried out without a lane closure on Berw Road. Stop/Go traffic boards will facilitate site deliveries on a limited number of occasions, scheduled for quieter times and lasting around 15 minutes.

Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said:

“This work will undertake repairs to the next section of the river wall along Berw Road, which was damaged at several locations during storm events in recent years. It follows a similar repair scheme to a section of the wall just further north, located opposite Berw Road Field, which was completed before Christmas.

“We have again welcomed important Welsh Government funding for this scheme, which is included in the dedicated programme for Storm Dennis repairs in 2024/25. This amounts to £3.61m funding for Rhondda Cynon Taf, and will ensure key schemes such as the Castle Inn Footbridge in Treforest, White Bridge in Pontypridd, and Feeder Pipe Footbridge in Abercynon, are progressed towards completion in the current financial year.

“This support complements the Council’s commitment to repair, maintain and future-proof key structures that support our road network across the County Borough. A £6.58m budget for Highway Structures was agreed by Cabinet in March 2024, and is included in our capital programme for the year ahead.

“The upcoming river wall repairs at Berw Road begin on May 13, with minimal overall disruption expected. Temporary footway closures will be in operation next to the wall, but the work can be carried out while maintaining two-way traffic flow. Thanks to the community in advance for your cooperation. We will work with our contractor to make as quick and efficient progress as possible.”
