Flood alleviation work at Kingcraft Street in Mountain Ash

Written by on 23rd February 2021

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will this week begin a flood alleviation scheme at Kingcraft Street in Mountain Ash, in order to upgrade the existing network and reduce the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

The scheme, which has been wholly funded by Welsh Government will incorporate a new headwall and manhole into the watercourse system. This will increase network capacity and allow for easier maintenance of the system in the future.

The Council has appointed Horan Construction as the contractor responsible for delivering the scheme. The contractor will access the works area via privately-owned land, so there is anticipated to be minimal disruption to road users and the wider community. Work will last for approximately four weeks.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “This is the latest example of the Council’s work across Rhondda Cynon Taf to deliver targeted flood alleviation measures based on flood risk. Since the New Year, progress has been made with a number of such schemes – at Pleasant Street in Pentre, Allen Street and Granville Terrace in Mountain Ash, the A4059 from Trecynon to Hirwaun, and two locations in Cwmbach. Major investments at Park Lane in Trecynon and Pentre Road also continue.

“It is important for the Council to pursue external investment to help deliver its programme of works, and it has welcomed Welsh Government funding for the upcoming works at Kingcraft Street and the sustainable drainage scheme at Mill Street in Pontypridd – with both commencing on site this week.

“The work at Kingcraft Street will upgrade the local drainage system over the next four weeks, with minimum disruption expected locally. The Council will work closely with its contractor to deliver the work as efficiently as possible.”
