Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB has vaccinated its 100,000 patient with the booster vaccine yesterday at the Community Vaccination Centre in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
CTM UHB began its COVID-19 Booster campaign on 27th September 2021, enabling more people to maintain protection ahead of the winter months. This is part of the wider vaccination programme which CTM UHB is taking with significant steps made in fighting the pandemic across Rhondda, Bridgend and Merthyr. A total of 789,578 vaccines have been given to date.
67 year old Raymond, from Pentre, was the100,000 patient to receive the booster at Rhondda Cynon Taff CVC. He has concerns about protecting family and friends and people in the community and said: ‘It’s essential to keep you and your family protected. I’m chuffed to bits to be the 100000 person to get the Booster. More people should do it so there is herd immunity.’
Hawys Youlden is the Senior Nurse Vaccination and Immunisation Coordinator, for Rhondda and Taff Ely Locality, and is pleased with the uptake. She said:
‘It’s brilliant to see so many people take up the opportunity to have a top up booster. It’s really important that we protect ourselves and our loved ones, especially with the festive season coming up when we want to spend time with our family and friends.’
A recent study by UK Health Security Agency shows that boosters give over 90% protection against symptomatic COVID-19 in adults over 50.
These findings show that 2 weeks after receiving a booster dose, protection against symptomatic infection in adults aged 50 years and over was 93.1% in those with Oxford/AstraZeneca as their primary course and 94.0% for Pfizer-BioNTech.
People in priority groups will become eligible for the booster 26 weeks after their second dose.
Cwm Taf Morgannwg is asking people not to phone or contact their GP, pharmacy or hospital to ask when they will get the booster vaccine, as people in the priority groups will be contacted individually and invited to dedicated vaccination clinics.
