Caru Cymru Launch Litter Free Zone Campaign Targeting Schools Across Wales

Written by on 2nd February 2022

As part of the Caru Cymru initiative, Keep Wales Tidy has launched its Litter Free Zone campaign targeting primary and secondary schools across Wales providing a range of opportunities to actively engage pupils to look after their local environment.

In a bid to encourage schools to sign up, Keep Wales Tidy is giving away 100 free litter picking kits to be distributed throughout Wales, and is asking schools to sign up early to be in with a chance of acquiring a free kit.

The Litter Free Zone campaign is asking schools to keep their own grounds and school entrance clear and to adopt an area within their local community to look after. As part of the sign-up pledge, all schools taking part will be asked to regularly report the amount of litter collected using the Epicollect system.

The goal is a cleaner, more beautiful community, with a strong sense of civic pride. As more students participate in the Litter Free Zone campaign, not only will less litter need to be collected, people will also be less inclined to deposit litter.

Tim Wort, Education Manager for Keep Wales Tidy commented:

“The Litter Free Zones campaign is a great initiative for schools across Wales to join in with. Tackling litter is a great way to engage pupils in taking action to help their local community, and they will feel empowered knowing they can make that real difference to their local environment”.

The initiative has been funded by the Welsh Government Rural Communities, Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

Any school wishing to take part in the campaign can visit the Keep Wales Tidy website and to register their interest or download the Litter Free Zone toolkit providing full information on how to sign up. https://keepwalestidy.cymru/caru-cymru/litter-free-zones/
