Aberaman kickboxer Adam De Vet is set to take on the world’s best kickboxers in his age group having been selected to represent Great Britain at the WAKO World Championships in Jesolo, Italy later this year.

As the only Welsh junior kickboxer to be selected to represent Great Britain, Adam is hoping to add to his impressive collection of trophies and medals charting his success since his first competition at the age of six years.

WAKO is the Governing Body under which kickboxing is now recognised as an Olympic sport. Adam said

“I am proud to have been selected to represent GB at this level. I am hoping that a successful competition in Italy will be a step closer to Olympic selection.”

15 year old Adam, a former pupil of Blaengwawr Primary School, and currently a pupil at Aberdare Community School added “I would like to encourage young people to become fit and participate in sport. If you work hard anything is possible. Ultimately my ambition is to set up my own Dojo as a Centre of Excellence.”

Adam trains twice a week at WKO Aberdare and Pontypridd coached by Rachel House. Travelling at weekends to train in Llanelli and Port Talbot with coaches Leigh Randall and Mark Watkins. Once a month Adam also travels to various venues around Great Britain to train with WAKO GB squad.

Adam said

“I am grateful to all the coaches who have helped me. In particular Rachel House who has coached me from my very first session, has believed in me and has pushed and encouraged me to be the best I can be.”

His hard work and commitment has paid off winning medals at competitions such as the British Championships, European Championships and Irish Open and now Adam is ready to take the next step on the world stage.
