“Wicked” at the Wales Millennium Centre: A Spellbinding spectacle of Friendship, Magic, and Identity

Written by on 31st October 2024

As I settled into my seat, a wave of anticipation washed over me—the goosebumps had already begun. I was eager to revisit one of my all-time favourite musicals, and Wicked did not disappoint.

Currently dazzling audiences at the Wales Millennium Centre, this latest run of Wicked is a mesmerizing spectacle that celebrates its 18th anniversary in the UK, having captivated over 65 million people worldwide and garnered more than 100 global awards. I myself have had the pleasure of experiencing it four times, and each performance reveals new layers of magic.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s acclaimed novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical reimagines the backstory of Oz’s most iconic characters: Elphaba, the Wicked Witch, and Glinda (the “Ga” is silent, a fun fact for newcomers). Their paths intertwine unexpectedly as they navigate the complexities of friendship, power, and the murky divide between good and evil.

The performances in this production are nothing short of exceptional. Laura Pick delivers a powerful portrayal of Elphaba, her outstanding vocals and emotional depth capturing the character’s evolution from misunderstood outcast to empowered figure with heart-stopping intensity. Sarah O’Connor’s Glinda is equally remarkable, exuding buoyant energy and impeccable comedic timing, while also conveying the emotional weight of her transformation. The chemistry between Pick and O’Connor electrifies the stage, drawing the audience into the emotional whirlwind that envelops both characters.

Visually, this production is a feast for the senses. From the shimmering Emerald City to the towering, enigmatic forests, each set piece reflects the creative team’s dedication to immersing the audience in Oz. The lighting, costumes, and choreography synergistically enhance the emotional resonance of every scene, making iconic moments like “Defying Gravity” and “One Short Day” feel as breath-taking and transformative as they did on opening night.

Yet what truly distinguishes Wicked is its thematic depth. Beneath the dazzling surface lies a poignant exploration of identity, prejudice, and the costs associated with challenging societal norms. Each viewing has revealed fresh nuances, reminding me how the story remains timely and relevant. Wicked is not merely a musical; it is a celebration of individuality, courage, and the unexpected journeys we undertake. This production is essential viewing for both long-time fans and newcomers, illustrating that some stories only deepen in significance with each retelling.
