Top Tonypandy Teacher

Written by on 20th June 2017

A Tonypandy Community College teacher is one of the best in the business – and that’s official!

Luisa Martin-Thomas has won a prestigious Pearson Teaching Award – making her one of the top in the UK.

The Senior Assistant Headteacher at Tonypandy Community College will travel to London to receive her Silver Teaching Award in the category, The Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School.

Selected from thousands of nominations, Luisa is one of just 10 winners who will be celebrated on Thank a Teacher Day.

These outstanding local heroes of education will be presented with their prestigious Silver Pearson Teaching Awards in schools and colleges across England, Ireland and Wales.

The Pearson Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, created to recognize the life-changing impact an inspirational teacher can have on the lives of the young people they teach.

Luisa, who joined the staff of the College in 2003, said:

“I am absolutely overjoyed to have been nominated for this incredible award and to hear that I’ve been named as one of the winners is wonderful.

“I cannot thank my students and fellow staff enough for all of their support and hard work. Tonypandy Community College is a unique working environment where we all strive to create the very best education facility for all of our students and to be recognised by students is the ultimate honour.”

Luisa will now join fellow Silver Award winners at the UK final of the Pearson Teaching Awards, a glittering ceremony held in central London in October.

There, they will find out which of them has won one of just 11 Gold Plato Awards, the UK’s “Oscars for Teachers”.

This ceremony, titled “Britain’s Classroom Heroes”, will be filmed and broadcast by the BBC as a showcase of excellence in education.   Previous award presenters have included former prime ministers David Cameron & Tony Blair, acting legends Alison Steadman, Sheila Hancock and Timothy West and sports and TV personalities including Helen Glover, Brendan Cole and Nadiya Hussain.

Headteacher Nathan Prygodzicz said:

“We are immensely proud of the honour bestowed on Luisa who has worked incredibly hard to achieve this worthy award.

“Once again it proves the high standard of teaching we offer in the College and we wish her the very best of luck on her visit to London in the hope she will bring further glory back to Tonypandy.”

Newly appointed President of the Pearson Teaching Awards, the award winning children’s novelist, Michael Morpurgo explained:

“Becoming an inspirational teacher is a serious, admirable commitment.  And memorable, outstanding teaching should be celebrated by educators, pupils, parents and throughout society.  With these awards we’re taking the time to recognise the remarkable, often unappreciated efforts of fantastic teachers up and down the country.”
