Road safety improvements to be delivered throughout Llantrisant

Written by on 11th March 2021

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will start work to deliver a Safe Routes in Communities scheme in Llantrisant – to implement new road safety measures aimed at addressing residents’ concerns about the speed and volume of local traffic.

The work, which is part funded by Welsh Government, will begin from Monday, March 15,following last month’s public engagement process to inform residents about the plans and invite them to have their say. It will deliver:

  • Improved footways, tactile paving and dropped kerbs at several locations throughout the town.
  • A series of traffic calming measures, including a new 20mph speed limit along the B4595 and a 30mph speed limit on Llantrisant Common.
  • A new junction plateau between the B4595 and Dan Caerlan,
  • A new 7.5 tonne weight limit for all vehicles travelling through the town – aside from those requiring access to local premises.

The Council has appointed Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd as the contractor with responsibility for delivering the work, which will last around six weeks. Implementation of the scheme will require localised traffic management at various locations and stages of work, in order to safely make progress. Every effort will be made to minimise this disruption to the local community.

There will be a required road closure in order to install the junction plateau at Dan Caerlan. Once final arrangements are confirmed for this, the Council’s contractor will write to local residents to give them advanced warning about the closure, and to outline details in relation to alternative routes for motorists.

The upcoming work at several locations in Llantrisant has been designed following concerns raised to the Council about the high level of traffic though the town, along with the speed that motorists are travelling. The Council has secured funding from Welsh Government’s Safe Routes in Communities scheme in order to deliver these changes.

It follows a number of Safe Routes schemes delivered in recent years – including in Cwmaman, Tonypandy, Tonyrefail and Treorchy alongside 21stCentury Schools improvements for those areas in 2018/19. Similar works to increase road safety and promote local walking and cycling were also completed in Llwynypia and Abercynon in 2020. Work to deliver road safety improvements through Cilfynydd has also got underway recently, and is being delivered alongside the Llantrisant scheme over the coming weeks.

The work in Llantrisant will begin from Monday, requiring localised periods of traffic management as the Council’s contractor moves between each location. There will also be a road closure for one part of the work, which will be communicated to local residents by letter in due course.

The Council would like to thank residents and road users in advance for their cooperation as this important scheme is delivered.
