Ahead of tomorrow evening‘s women’s rugby game which will see Wales take on the USA, Alex Davies-Jones MP has urgently contacted S4C to ask them to clarify why the women’s rugby match will not be broadcast on television.
The game is instead being broadcast on YouTube by the WRU and S4C, while coverage is also being made available on the app, S4C Clic.
The TikTok Women’s Six Nations, shown on the BBC, was the most viewed on record with 10.4m viewing hours on UK television in 2023, compared to the previous best of 7.7m in 2022.
Alex Davies-Jones MP said:
“The popularity of the women’s game is crystal clear to see so it is hugely disappointing to learn that S4C have chosen not to broadcast this game on terrestrial television.
We still have a long way to go until female sport including rugby is seen as being equal to the men’s game and decisions like this have the potential to take us a step backwards. The only way we can encourage more women into sport is if there are fair opportunities, and that’s why I have written to S4C urging them to reconsider this decision. They must air this match tomorrow night to ensure that no one is excluded.”
