Pontypridd MS Welcomes Another Important Step Towards A Llantrisant To Cardiff Metro Line

Pontypridd Member of Senedd Mick Antoniw has welcomed a further £565,000 awarded to RCT Council from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund to further develop proposals for a Llantrisant to Cardiff Metro line (‘the Cardiff North-West’ rail line).
The award follows initial funding of £135,000 in 2019 which allowed the completion of the first stage feasibility assessment.
The proposed route would be a new line, travelling from Llantrisant to Cardiff with potential spurs at Pontyclun and Beddau would help to alleviate pressure on the congested A119.
Also announced is further funding for development work for a new station at Treforest and a park and ride scheme at Upper Boat.
Welcoming the news, Mick Antoniw MS said:
“I welcome this major investment in our Metro rail infrastructure and commitment to developing much needed new stations and park and ride schemes in Treforest and Upper boat.
“I am over the moon with the progress that is being made to develop plans for a new Cardiff North West Rail Line. The commitment of £565,000 to develop firm plans for a new rail corridor makes possible the reopening of the former Cardiff to Llantrisant railway line, with spurs to Pontyclun and Beddau.
“I have been arguing and campaigning for this line to be reopened for nearly ten years, ever since I was elected as the Pontypridd Assembly Member. This is another important step and it is exciting to see this project continuing to progress.
“I firmly believe that if we are to alleviate traffic congestion and improve our environment we have to develop our public transport infrastructure. Re opening former railway lines is one way to achieve this. I look forward to working with Welsh Government, RCT and Cardiff Councils to make this happen.”
