Alex Davies-Jones, MP for Pontypridd, has secured a £5,000 donation to Tonyrefail Boys and Girls Club (BGC) in aid of their Crowdfunder to improve their facilities.
Tonyrefail BGC initially set their Crowdfunder target to £30,000, in aid of a new 100-seater stand and new dugouts. But after just two weeks and an incredible community response, the Crowdfunder easily surpassed its target and the club are now aiming to raise £55,000.
With the help of Alex Davies-Jones’ support, the club have managed an incredible fundraising achievement and are very close to achieving their overall extended fundraising target.
The club, based at Tyn y Bryn Park, runs fifteen football teams ranging from Under 5s through to Seniors, and boasts over 300 players. Founded in 1992, Tonyrefail BGC is a true community club, and is a space where players, coaches, volunteers, supporters and the community come together through sport.
The donation from Alex Davies-Jones comes from funds raised by the Mynydd Community Benefit Fund, set up to benefit community projects across Rhondda Cynon Taf. As the former Councillor for Tonyrefail West, Alex Davies-Jones was able to allocate this year’s Community Benefit Payment to the club as her final act of office before stepping down as Councillor in May 2022.
Alex Davies-Jones’ donation also comes as Sport Wales made a £9,000 donation to the club’s Crowdfunder in early May 2022 as part of their national A Place for Sport campaign.
Speaking at a recent visit to the club, Alex Davies-Jones MP said:
“I am so pleased that my final act of office as a Community Councillor for Tonyrefail West has been to secure funding for a club that I have been so proud to have in my ward since I was first elected.
“The club are such an important part of our community and have done so much to support our local area for many years.
“Whilst I chose not to re-stand as a Community Councillor for Tonyrefail West, I still have the privilege of representing the area as the Member of Parliament for Pontypridd and Taff Ely. I will absolutely continue to use my voice to promote grassroots community football in Westminster and beyond and look forward to continuing to support the club for many years to come.”
Huw John, Club Secretary at Tonyrefail BGC, said:
“Tonyrefail Boys Club are fortunate to have a facility located in the centre of the village. The response to our ground improvement project from national and local businesses, donations from the community and community benefit funds has been overwhelming.
“Over the past few years Alex has been supportive of the club’s project to improve our facilities and bought into our vision.
“Alex supported phase 1 of the project securing funding for the club to secure the pitch and erect perimeter fencing. We can’t thank Alex enough for obtaining funding towards the spectator stand and look forward to continuing to work with Alex on the next development phase of Tyn y Bryn Park playing facilities.”
