Platinum Jubilee Celebration Weekend

Written by on 18th May 2022

A special extended Bank Holiday Weekend in June will provide an opportunity for communities and people in Rhondda Cynon Taf to join others throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone.

On February 6, 2022, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth.

To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, events and initiatives will take place throughout the year, culminating in a Spring Bank Holiday on Thursday, June 2, and a Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday on Friday, June 3, followed by the weekend.

Preparations are already well underway in Rhondda Cynon Taf as residents, schools, charities, organisations and the local business community get set to join in the celebrations.

RCT Libraries

Public libraries across Rhondda Cynon Taf will be joining in with The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations – and they need your help. RCT Libraries will be staging a commemorative Platinum Jubilee Exhibition featuring photographs and newspaper coverage of both The Queen’s Coronation at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1952, and the subsequent Royal Visits to Rhondda Cynon Taf. The RCT Platinum Jubilee Exhibition will travel around library locations in the County Borough.

The public is also being asked to help extend the comprehensive RCT Archive for future generations by asking residents to take along their own photographs relating to The Queen’s 70-year reign, to three designated libraries in Rhondda Cynon Taf – Llys Cadwyn in Pontypridd, Aberdare Library, and Treorchy Library. Library staff would also like to see your own old 8mm and Super 8 films of special Royal occasions in order to borrow them for conversion to a digital format. These will be returned safely to you, along with your own digital copy.

Schools Celebrations

Schools across Rhondda Cynon Taf will be holding their own special events to mark the occasion. We are asking all schools, when posting their photographs on social media, to include the hashtag #PlatinumJubileeRCTand we will share as many of these celebrations as possible on the Council’s social media platforms.

The four days of celebrations will include public events and community activities, as well as national moments of reflection on The Queen’s 70 years of service. Visit the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s interactive map to find out more about events taking place across the UK.
