Local housing charity Adref has launched their StreetSmarts service for homeless people and rough sleepers in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

This innovative project, based in Pontypridd, is in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

The service supports people that maybe sleeping rough by providing them with advice, access to food, showers, clothes washing facilities and help with identifying potential short and long-term accommodation.

StreetSmarts Project Officer Tony Gait said

‘The hostel is constantly full with referrals from the local authority so this service was created to help with the overspill. We can assist with advice and support with benefits, access to a GP or other medical help and provide practical assistance such as as showers, food and try to get them somewhere temporary to stay.’

The community is being encouraged to support the project with donations of new sleeping bags and/or pop-up tents that people can use if there is no alternative but a night outside. These can be dropped into  the Adref charity shops in Pontypridd and Aberdare, or call to make other arrangements.

Councillor Rhys Lewis, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Well-being & Cultural Services said of the project

“this new service will further help to support some of the most vulnerable in our society. Providing this service is the first step in helping people off the streets and into homes, which is a key priority for the Council. Any items that people can donate to Adref would be greatly received as they are extremely appreciated by those that need them.”

Tony Gait added,

‘Even when the weather is as warm as it is right now, people need shelter and access to bathrooms, clean clothes and someone that is working with them to try and make things better. This project ticks those boxes’.

Adref are in the process of setting up advice surgeries throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf so that people don’t need to travel to Pontypridd. This will include Taff’s Well; Aberdare; Ferndale and Treorchy.

If you are homeless or need some advice call 01443 486439 to see what support they can provide.
