Teams from two utilities have come together to raise vital money for the local Hopkinstown community.
Players from both gas emergency and pipeline service, Wales & West Utilities, and electricity provider, National Grid, have united in a local cricket match in a bid to raise hundreds of pounds to benefit Hopkinstown Youth Club.
With colleagues from both companies donning their whites to play for Hopkinstown Cricket Club for many years they decided to come together in a friendly game to raise money to help keep the local Hopkinstown Boys and Girls Club open all year round.
Wales & West Utilities Gareth Hopkins, who’s worked at the company for 18 years, explains:
“I’ve played cricket for years now and we’ve got a great team, with many of us working for Wales & West Utilities and National Grid.
“As a cricket team we always look to raise money for local causes so decided what better way than to have a friendly, but competitive, game of cricket whilst raising money to support the local youth club.”
The family friendly event was held last Friday and saw more than 100 people come together to watch the game, which ended in a win for Wales & West Utilities, whilst enjoying a BBQ and an evening of entertainment.
The event raised more than £421 for Hopkinstown Youth Club and Wales & West Utilities have provided match funding of £300 to support its colleagues fundraising efforts .
Gareth’s colleague Jason Slade helped him organise the event and said:
“The evening had such a great feel to it and what’s more is that we raised hundreds of pounds to support the youth club. With the Club operating as a charity the money will go towards essential maintenance which will allow the young people of Hopkinstown to have a community space they can call their own.
“We’re glad that so many people came together to have a fun night, whilst donating money that will help make such a difference to our young community. On behalf of us all I’d like to say a huge thank you.”
