Gavin & Stacey to return for Christmas special

Written by on 28th May 2019

James Corden, who created the show with Ruth Jones and stars as Smithy, said they had been “keeping the news secret for a while”.

Just some tidy news for Gavin & Stacey fans, that’s what – in the shape of a one-off Christmas special.

Some nine years after our favourite Welsh-English duo and friends left our screens, the series is set to return to BBC One.

The show, starring Mathew Horne and Joanna Page as the titular couple and created by Ruth Jones and James Corden, who play Nessa and Smithy, aired over three seasons from 2007 to 2010.

Corden revealed its return on Twitter on Tuesday, saying he and Jones had been “keeping this secret for a while”.

Following the announcement, several of the shows stars also tweeted about the comeback, and the search terms Gavin, Stacey, James Corden, Ruth Jones and Christmas Day were soon trending on Twitter in the UK.

In a statement, Corden and Jones said: “Over the last 10 years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like.

“So, in secret, we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special,” they said.

“We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again, and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.

“We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen.”

Gavin & Stacey told the story of Gavin (Horne), from Essex, and Stacey (Page), from Barry in Wales, who fell in love and married after speaking on the phone to each other every day at work.

The sitcom was a breakthrough hit for BBC Three and eventually moved to BBC One.

Corden, who has since found fame in the US as host of The Late Late Show, will reprise his role as Smithy alongside Jones’s Nessa, with other supporting cast members – Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Walters and Alison Steadman – also set to return.

Lamb also tweeted the news, saying he was “absolutely delighted to be able to share this little secret at last”.
