Drivers warned as police put brakes on vehicle asb in Aberdare

South Wales Police have stepped-up patrols in and around the Tesco car park in Aberdare following complaints from nearby residents about revving engines, speeding cars and screeching tyres.

Since the beginning of September, eight motorists who have been identified and caught offending have been issued with Section 59 notices.

They now risk having their vehicle seized if they are caught offending again.

Local neighbourhood policing officers teamed up with the roads policing team and local businesses, after reports of antisocial behaviour began to escalate.

So called ‘boy racers’ were buying food at the local fast-food restaurant and using the adjacent Tesco car park as a meeting place.
There have been 12 separate reports in the past three months from residents, often in the early hours of the morning.

Local Policing Inspector John Alexander Sullivan, said: “These individuals have been causing problems for some time and in the past three months we have been receiving more and more calls to our control room.
“But it won’t be tolerated and we and will not hesitate to seize their prized cars if they continue to behave in such a way.”

When a vehicle is seized it is impounded and there is a fee of £150 plus £25 for every day over 24 hours that it is not collected. You also need a valid MOT and motor insurance to collect it.

He added: “We worked closely with McDonald’s and Tesco who have been extremely supportive and will continue to work with us.
“We are also looking at ways to design-out the problem and are advising them.”
