Cwm Taf Morgannwg offer walk in flu clinics for Children

Written by on 17th January 2022

Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB flu vaccination teams are offering parents the opportunity to get their child vaccinated with the flu vaccine (nasal spray), if they have not already done so.   They will be opening up their Community Vaccination Centres for walk in sessions on the fourth weekend in January, and hope that parents take up this offer to get their child vaccinated.

The vaccination teams are concerned that children who were ill and off school missed out on the school vaccination programme and will be at risk as we enter the final winter months, when influenza is more prevalent.  More worryingly, is the extremely low up-take of the flu vaccine among two and three year olds across the local authority areas of Bridgend CBC, Merthyr Tydfil CBC and Rhondda Cynon Taff CBC.

The walk in clinics will be held in all five of Cwm Taf Morgannwg’s community vaccination centres on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd January, between 9am and 4pm.

Senior Vaccination Nurse, Hawys Youlden said: “Flu is a very serious disease, and is a very unpleasant illness for children, with potentially serious complications, including bronchitis and pneumonia.

“Children can spread flu in households and getting them vaccinated not only protects them, but also you and your loved ones.

“We know that some children missed the school vaccination programme because of illness, and I would urge parents to bring their child along to our weekend walk in sessions.   We’re very concerned about the low uptake, especially in our two to three age group.  This year flu is prevalent – unlike last year when we were all locked down.”

The children’s flu vaccine is offered as a yearly nasal spray to young children to help protect them against flu and is offered to children aged 2 years (on 31st Aug 2021) to Year 11 in school.

Our child flu walk in sessions will be held in our Community Vaccination Centres:
