Bus stop upgrades between Aberaman and Abercynon

Written by on 29th July 2020

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has begun a series of improvements to bus stops at 30 locations on the B4275/A4054 route between Aberaman and Abercynon, utilising full funding from Welsh Government.

The scheme will deliver upgrades ranging from new bus shelters to kerbing improvements, depending on the requirements at each location. This will ensure each bus stop is accessible to all community members, complying with the Disability Discrimination Act. The Council has secured £235,000 funding from Welsh Government’s Local Transport Network Fund for this scheme.

Calibre Contracting Ltd has been appointed as the contractor to deliver all elements of the scheme. Preparatory work started on July 22 – with the full works to implement the improvements beginning from Monday, July 27. The scheme is on course for completion during the early autumn in 2020.

The contractor will be working at only a small number of locations at any one time – in order to minimise disruption along the wider bus corridor. Traffic management will vary from one location to another. Where temporary traffic lights are required to carry out the work, advanced signage will be used. All work will adhere to the latest social distancing guidance.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “I’m pleased the Council has secured funding from Welsh Government to deliver bus stop upgrades at 30 locations between Aberaman and Abercynon, to be completed later this year. These are important improvements to increase accessibility to public transport for all community members, complementing recent Council investment across the wider Cynon Valley bus corridor.

“The Council has also recently improved a number bus stops in Pontyclun and, using Welsh Government funding, on the A4119 corridor at Groesfaen – following on from bus corridor investment through Cilfynydd in recent times.”
