Beer drinkers returning to pubs in Wales can finally get a taste of fresh cask beer

Written by on 26th April 2021

Beer drinkers in Wales join the thousands across the UK sharing photos using the popular #CaskIsBack hashtag

A new campaign is calling on beer drinkers to back small independent brewing and pubs in Wales and opt for a pint of fresh cask beer from a local independent brewery when they return to pubs this week.

Sales of hand-pulled cask beer, which can only be sold in pubs, have been hit hard by Coronavirus restrictions – with sales of this fresh beer style down 70% over the last twelve months – but a new campaign is seeking to reverse those fortunes and has the backing of brewers, beer drinkers and publicans alike.

The ‘Cask is BACK, so back CASK’ campaign has been launched by the Society of Independent Brewers, the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), the British Institute of Innkeeping, and Cask Marque – who are championing Britain’s National drink, which can only be enjoyed down the pub.

“Beer drinkers across Wales will today be enjoying the freedom to visit their local pub or brewery taproom beer garden, the only place you can get fresh, cask-conditioned beer – which due to Covid lockdown has been off the menu for beer lovers for much of the last twelve months.

Cask beer and pubs go hand-in-hand and as such it’s the drink millions of beer lovers have missed most during lockdown – but whether you’re a real ale enthusiast or sometimes beer drinker, we’re asking everyone to support their local independent breweries and opt for their first pint back in the pub to be a delicious local cask beer. For publicans, those pubs that do cask and do it well will reap the rewards so we’re encouraging all in the pub trade to prioritise cask and ensure that first pint back is in tip-top condition. The message is simple – cask is back, so back cask!” James Calder, SIBA Chief Executive.

“With pubs reopening outside it finally feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel and small independent breweries in Wales can begin on the long road to recovery. By choosing a pint of cask beer from a local brewery like us, rather than mass-produced beers from Global companies, you are supporting local business and jobs – and it’ll likely taste much better too! We’re excited to welcome you back to our pubs and hope you’re looking forward to your first beer as much as we are to serving you it.” Roy Allkin, Founder Boss Brewing and SIBA Wales & West Director.

Thousands of people are sharing photos of themselves on social media enjoying a pint of fresh cask beer in the pub using the hashtag #CaskIsBack, to find out more about the campaign visit
