Aberdare youngsters hopeful of a win in largest school rugby tournament

Four teams from an Aberdare secondary are hopeful of bringing home the silverware as they compete in the National Schools Sevens at Rosslyn Park next week.

The teams from Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun Comprehensive School in Penywaun, Aberdare have entered the world’s largest rugby school’s tournament and will now compete against other schools from across the UK in a bid to reach the final and be crowned ultimate winners.

After a two year break due to Covid, the school has been working hard to secure sponsorship to enable them to make the trip down the M4 and are now ready to showcase their skills and competitive spirit.

Director of 7’s, Ceri Type at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun Comprehensive School, said:

“We are really excited to be playing in this prestigious tournament. It’s been a hard task to get to this point and we are extremely grateful for the companies that have stepped in to back our boys and provide sponsorship – without this, the tournament wouldn’t be possible.”

The school has received backing from local energy company, Pennant Walters, alongside John Andrews Carpentry, Cynon Contractors, Lewis Memorials and AP Transport & Hire Ltd.

The funding from Pennant Walters is linked to Pennant Walters’ 9 turbine 22 MW Mynydd Bwllfa windfarm near Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf, which became operational in summer 2015. It builds on previous donations which have seen the company provide money to support various local community groups.

Pennant Walters managing director, Dale Hart, said:

“We are thrilled to back the teams from Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun and wish them every luck in the tournament.

“Youngsters have missed out so much during the pandemic and it’s great to see the competition taking place this year.

“Our wind energy project community funds exist to make a difference to the local communities in which we work – benefitting people directly

“We will be closely following the teams progression at the end of the month. Good luck all!”

The Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens has evolved into the world’s largest rugby tournament with over 10,000 boys and girls aged 11 – 18 competing annually. It will take place between 21-24 March.
