27 New, Affordable Homes Coming to Penygraig

Trivallis has begun works to transform a former junior school in Penygraig into 27 new, affordable homes.

The plan is to create 14 one-bedroom flats, eight two-bedroom houses, three three-bedroom houses, one two-bedroom adapted bungalow; and one three-bedroom adapted bungalow on Hendrecafn Road, on the site of the former school, which has been vacant since it closed in the Summer of 2018.

Planning permission was granted in December 2020 and demolition works started on site February 2021. The scheme is being funded using a Social Housing Grant from Welsh Government and will comply with Welsh Government DQR standards.

All homes built as part of this development will fully meet the Lifetime Homes standard and therefore can be adapted to the needs of any future potential tenants.

Sarah Kirton, development manager at Trivallis, said: “We are so pleased to be bringing an attractive, well designed mix of flats, houses, bungalows and green spaces to this site, which has been derelict for almost three years now.

“Our aim is to provide much needed, high quality, affordable housing across Rhondda Cynon Taf. Using land which is derelict, such as the Penygraig Junior School site, means we can offer a new lease of life to areas across our communities.

“We have carried out consultation with residents in the surrounding area and found that the former school has a great legacy in the village. Although the former building was not sustainable or safe for housing, the new development will incorporate some design features as a nod to the school’s rich history, such as the old school bell.”

Calling past pupils and teachers

Trivallis is calling out to former students and teachers of Penygraig Junior School to share memories of their time there and contribute to a time capsule, which will be buried on site as part of the development.

This development will be completed by Trivallis in partnership with WRW Construction, Le Trucco Architects, NJP Engineers, Strongs Partnership, and Asbri Planning.
