Mick Antoniw, Member of Senedd for Pontypridd, Wayne Thomas, Vice-President of the National Union of Mineworkers and other volunteers will leave for Ukraine in a three-vehicle convoy on 9th February to bring essential medical, food and clothing supplies to front-line troops.
This latest trip will mean that a total of fifteen vehicles have been donated and delivered under the ‘Senedd Friends of Ukraine’ initiative and will bring the estimated value of life-saving supplies donated to £1 million.
The convoy will arrive in Ukraine close to the second anniversary of the illegal Russian invasion and in the run-up to the 40th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike. The aid will be delivered to Mineworkers’ unions, who organise distribution to the front-line.
Mick Antoniw, Member of Senedd for Pontypridd said:
“As we approach the second anniversary of Putin’s illegal war, I am humbled that all parts of Welsh society continue to be so generous with their support.
“All the vehicles donated are used on the front-line, often as ambulances. We know from reports by the soldiers themselves, that the food, clothing and medical aid we provide makes a huge difference.
“I have heard talk of ‘conflict fatigue’, but that has not been my experience and the people of Wales, businesses such as Alcumus in my own constituency, the NUM and other trades unions continue to show their support for Ukraine both financially and with their time.”
Wayne Thomas, Vice-President, National Union of Mineworkers said:
“The National Union of Mineworkers has been proud to be an active part of this aid initiative from the outset.
“With the 40th anniversary of the Miners’ strike approaching, it is particularly satisfying to be able give back something to our Ukrainian comrades in the Independent and Pablograv mining unions, who gave the NUM such incredible to support during the Miners’ Strike.”
