Nos Galan – Security Increased
Written by Jamie on 6th December 2017
There will be increased security measures in place for this year’s Nos Galan Road Races in Mountain Ash on New Year’s Eve, and as a result, extended temporary road closures will be in place.
This is in anticipation of the estimated crowd of over 10,000 spectators and the 1,700 competitors who will be coming along to enjoy the unique atmosphere at the world-famous event.
The 2017 Nos Galan Road Races are once again set to be the biggest New Year’s Eve street party in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
To meet the demand of the huge influx of visitors to the town centre, the Nos Galan Park and Ride will once again be operational, with a second overflow car park being set up to mitigate the road closures in Oxford Street, Mountain Ash – the main route of the races – starting from 3.30pm onwards. Diversions will be in place.
To facilitate this event, there will also be temporary road closures in place from 4.30pm onwards along Llanwonno Road, Cilhaul Terrace, High Street, Pryce Street and surrounding areas. These will be rolling road closures, managed on the night by South Wales Police.
Temporary diversions will also be in place due to the increased number of people who line the route to welcome the Nos Galan Mystery Runner from St Gwynno’s Church, Llanwonno, to the town centre.
Cllr Ann Crimmings, Chair of the Nos Galan Committee and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, said:
“Due to the fact that our races have increased in popularity in recent years, we work closely with South Wales Police throughout the planning stages of such a large-scale family event.
“With events of this magnitude, there will inevitably be some disruption, but we ask motorists and residents to bear with us and, if necessary, to make alternative travel arrangements for the duration of the Nos Galan Road Races.
“Safety is, as always, of paramount concern and we continue to work with South Wales Police to ensure that additional security measures will be in place.
“This will include increased police and security staffing, along with extra concrete barriers on roads around the town centre.
“We are looking forward to another fantastic night, with thousands of residents and visitors in the town to cheer on the runners and enjoy what is always a memorable occasion for all.”
Motorists are advised to allow extra times for their journeys in and around Mountain Ash on New Year’s Eve and competitors are advised to arrive well in advance of race start times.
- The first of the Children’s Races are set to get underway at 5.15pm…
- followed by the arrival of the Nos Galan Mystery Runner at 6.20pm…
- The Elite Race will start at 7pm…
- followed by the Adult 5k Fun Run at 7.30pm.
A FREE Nos Galan Park and Ride service will once again operate this year. A shuttle bus will run every 10-15 minutes, from 3.30pm until 9.30pm, on Sunday, December 31.
The Park and Ride facility will be located on the A4059 at Mountain Ash Comprehensive School, New Road, Mountain Ash, CF45 4DG.
The Park and Ride drop-off and pick-up point will be the bus stop opposite the Aberdare Hotel, Ffrwd Crescent, Mountain Ash, CF45 4AB. This location is within walking distance of the town centre.
