Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Nos Galan Committee are delighted to announce the two Support Runners for the 2016 Nos Galan Road Races.
14 year old Holly James is a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg, Pontypridd, and joined Aberdare Athletics Club when she was 10-years-old. She has represented the club in many cross country races and has also competed for her school.
Among her athletics highlights so far was being selected last year for Glamorgan County in the Welsh School Cross Country Championships.
She also competes for Aberdare Athletics Club in the South Wales Under-15s track season and has also ran for the South Wales team in the British League. This year she came third in the 3,000m at the South Wales championships.
Most Saturdays Holly takes part in the Pontypridd 5K Park Run and has successfully completed 90 races so far in her athletics career.
Her aim is to reach 100 races, which would make her the first 14-year-old girl in Wales to do so. Her Personal Best time places her in the top three per cent in the UK for her age group.
13 year old Darien James is a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun, and has been a keen athlete for many years.
He has been a member of Aberdare Athletics Club since the age of eight and has represented his school in cross country races, track and field events. He is also currently competing in the Gwent Cross Country League.
As well as his love of athletics, he also plays rugby on the wing for Cefn Coed RFC.
Cllr Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Culture and also Chair of the Nos Galan Committee, said:
“Our Support Runners are two very important figures in our annual Nos Galan Road Races and we are delighted that Holly and Darien will be fulfilling the roles this year.
“As their roles suggest, the Acolytes accompany our Nos Galan Mystery Runner throughout the entire event and I am sure the thousands of people on the night will be cheering them on just as much as our Mystery Runner.”
Both Holly and Darian are delighted to be a part of the 2016 Nos Galan Road Races, which take place in Mountain Ash on New Year’s Eve.
The pair will accompany the 2016 Nos Galan Mystery Runner…but who will it be this year?
