Love Where You Live awards 2018

Environmental crusaders have been recognised and rewarded thanks to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s highly acclaimed Love Where You Live Awards (LWYL) 2018.

People who care so much about the County Borough have been officially recognised at the annual awards, which are celebrating their 10th year.

This year’s overall winner and winner of Best Kept Community/Best Community Project, Rhondda Fundraisers, showed how reusing items can have a positive impact on a whole community and even save lives!

Rhondda Fundraisers are a small group of volunteers who collect unwanted household items and auction them online to raise vital funds which benefit their local community.

In the last 3 years they have raised £15,000 and have helped local organisations raise the funds they need to purchase items for the local community which can be anything from rugby kits, cheerleading uniforms to external defibrillators.

They have also purchased a service dog to support a local child with autism and funded a Community Road Safety Campaign.

The items that are donated to Rhondda Fundraisers are mostly pre owned so they are helping to reduce the amount of items being sent to landfill when they could be used to help them raise funds for vital life saving equipment instead.

They collect anything from clothes, shoes, books, DVDs, ornaments, toys, curtains, toiletries, pictures and anything they feel would be suitable to be re-homed rather than just thrown away.  All of the donated items are photographed individually by the volunteers and listed online.  Rhondda Fundraisers say ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ and they work really hard to ensure almost all donated items are reused to prevent our landfill sites being filled up with items that could be of value to someone else. Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they are priceless.

The LWYL awards aim to celebrate and congratulate the people in Rhondda Cynon Taf who go above and beyond, just like the Rhondda Fundraisers, to protect our environment – ensuring that our County Borough is a clean, green place to live, work and visit.

From sprucing up their streets, to picking up litter and supporting all of the Council’s kerbside recycling services, a number of people were rewarded for a wide range of environmental projects and inspiring activities.

The event once again proved to be a huge success with 8 individuals, groups or schools scooping top awards.

The public have been busy nominating their local ‘Green’ heroes and these applications went before an independent panel of judges before the winners were announced.

Councillor Ann Crimmings, Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure & Heritage Services, said:

“The Love Where You Live Awards shine the spotlight on all the fantastic work that is going on within our communities, focusing on the people and projects that truly are making a difference to all of our lives.

“This year’s overall winner, Rhondda Fundraisers are a great example of the heroes we have in our community who work tirelessly to improve our County Borough, and help turn our waste in to treasure that can even save lives, well done! All the winners, and those short-listed today, are people who are committed to improving the local environment for the benefit of everyone, and the Love Where You Live Awards provide the perfect opportunity to reward each and every one of them.

“This is our opportunity to not only congratulate these remarkable people on their achievements, but also to encourage others to follow suit by ensuring that residents understand the importance of recycling and improving the environment.

“By working together, we can make Rhondda Cynon Taf an even cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit.”
