Opening the Church Village Community Route

(at 10am on 8th August 2010)

This new pedestrian and cycle track runs along the route of the Church Village Bypass and is now open. It goes from Cross Inn in the West to Tonteg in the East. It will shortly extend to Upper Boat and Sustrans hopes it will eventually connect to the Taff Trail

Ioan Dyer observed the opening ceremony at Cross Inn on behalf of Gtfm. The photos were kindly provided by RCTCBC.

As the clock ticked closer to 10am cyclists gathered patiently

The ribbon was cut by Jane Davidson, who is not only Pontypridd's AM and Assembly Environment Minister, but also a keen cyclist and supporter of Sustrans the cycling charity which helped plan and publicise this new route. Jane was accompanied by Cllr Russell Roberts (centre) who is Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and Cllr Andrew Morgan, RCT's Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning

The '888' Church Village Bypass Walk

(8km from 11am on 8th August 2010)

Gtfm's involvement began with a call to Station Manager Terry Mann from contractor Constain's Community Relations Manager, Brian Greaves, asking him to pass on the message that the road was nearly ready for Gtfm's intrepid charity fundraising volunteer Howard Griffiths to stroll along prior to its official opening to traffic. Costain first met Howard when he asked if he could walk along the Porth Relief Road for charity prior to its opening in 2006:

...then when construction of the Church Village Bypass began three years ago he was in touch again!

Well, on Sunday another dream came true and Howard was delighted to be joined on the walk by two Gtfm colleagues, this time in aid of Gtfm which is a registered charity in its own right.

Literally thousands of other people turned up too, on a cloudy but dry day, to walk along a 4km stretch of the new road and back.

Here is Howard (extreme right) with fellow Gtfm adventurers Alun Jones (left, seated) and Joan 'the phone' Smart (centre),

plus presenter Jamie (standing, left)

....and here they are again from another angle!

Presenters Jamie and Chris in training (as if) for their 'marathon' 4 hour live broadcast on Gtfm!

Walkers gathered for the 11am start. They stretched back from the starting line as far as the eye could see.

Some were in fancy dress too:

Gtfm's Outside Broadcast position for the live radio show was right next to the starting line:

Friday 'drivetime' presenter Jacob Strong

Country presenter Dave Spernaes (left) and whizzo sound editor Jonathan James

Jamie - larking about - AGAIN!

Doves were released at the start of the walk which was officially started by the Mayor of RCT Cllr Simon Lloyd (second from left)

Then - off they went!

Jane Davidson joins in....

It took nearly half an hour for the walkers to pass Gtfm's Roadshow position by the starting arch

...then one of the tail-enders noticed there were no lamposts in the nick of time!

Joan and Howard proving they went all the way to the Tonteg end of the route before returning!

Joan offers encouragement for the return leg of the walk

It was a great multi-generation family event:

And teams also took part from several well known organisations

....a couple of hours later... they've made it!

Howard and everyone else at Gtfm would like to thank Costain and RCT Events Team for making the day such a great success!

Joan 'the phone' at Zippo's Circus (14th July 2010)

Joan

Her colleagues on 107.9 thought she was mad to agree to go to Zippo's Circus and have knives

thrown at her for charity - even if that did mean Diabetes Cymru and Gtfm!

And she presented Gtfm's half share of her sponsorship takings to the Station Manager on 10th August

Here's the story of how Joan rasied these much appreciated funds.....

Find out more about Zippo's Circus at  www.zipposcircus.co.uk

Joan arrives in a confident mood. Getting her hair done always helps!

Her Sunday morning buddy Howard was there to give moral support

And fellow presenter Mark (left) was already there too because he'd been helping Jamie (right)

who presented his 'Drive Time' show live from the Circus from 4-7pm

Joan's fans Leah and Chloe arrive........

.

"Introducing Gtfm's Joan - who is a very brave lady......................."

".......because she's agreed to be hand-cuffed to this board and have knives thrown at her!"

... just time to sign the last Will and Testament ... .

Awaiting Joan's fate in the audience is Gtfm ticket competition winner Jean Hyde (centre), her grand daughter (left)

and a junior Zippo clown

Phew .....that didn't hurt a bit!  (All the way through, from behind her blindfold, Joan was heard muttering "mind my hair") Bless!

Splat!  A Zippo's clown thought Mark would benefit from some hair mousse - if thats what it was...!

anyway....

Well Done and 'Thank You' Joan!

Wendy on-air for Charity!

On the Breakfast Show on Friday 24th September 09, Baz suggested listeners should sponsor a live on-air appearance by Gtfm's Administrator Wendy in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, knowing she had previously avoided all attempts to get her to say something near a microphone, in contrast to her behind the scenes image as someone who is not normally a 'shrinking violet'.....

When the total pledged headed ever closer to 100 pounds at lunchtime she really had no choice..

Click here to hear our Wendy's debut on the wireless, encouraged by Joan and Becci!

Afterwards click the 'Back' button to return to this page.

Gtfm 70's Night - 13th August 2009

Thanks to everyone who came along to our 70's night at Ponty Rugby Club and made it a great success! The fabtastic atmosphere was helped in no small measure by those who dressed upin 1970's gear, with a bottle of bubbly awarded to the winner:

Steve and Trish Nicholls in true '70's style!

Scrumptious grub was provided by Llewellyn Valley Catering @ CF39 Coffee Shop. Brilliant raffle prizes were donated (in no particular order) by: Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, the Co-Op, Gibbons, Mc Coll's and a host of Gtfm colleagues and friends, before being lovingly wrapped by Joan and Julie. Our grateful thanks also extend to The Mayor of Pontypridd for bringing the coolest medallion in the room, Ponty Rugby Club for providing that room - along with it's brilliant bar staff, Spike for the 70's Disco, Kayleigh for the fabulous vocals, Quizmaster Alan with Pat for the mind boggling questions and last, but by no means least, event organiser, "never again" Wendy. Well - until the next time eh Wend?

COMIC RELIEF 'RED NOSE DAY' - GTFM SUPPORTS LOCAL FUND RAISING INITIATIVES:

GTFM publicised a number of local fund raising efforts on 'Red Nose Day'. Pictured above are Pontypridd Town Councillors Avril Reed (left) and Gwyneth Whiles, assisted by a colourful bird, who raised 130.00 by organising a 'CLASH 4 CASH', encouraging local people to dress up in as many non-matching colours as possible. When they dropped in to the station we snapped them in front of our bright orange logo. Ouch! RCT HOMES also carried out fund raising events all day - and by 6pm had collected 1,726.00. Well done indeed!

The Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, County Borough Councillor Margaret Davies told GTFM's Becci

why she chose the BHF as one of her special charities this year on the Breakfast Show.

Becci then spent the day reporting live from local organisations which joined in....

...including Health with Herbs in Taff Street Pontypridd, which has organised a raffle for the cute teddy in the picture.

You've still got time to enter because it closes at the end of February...

There were Love Messages in the window of the BHS Shop in Taff Street, Pontypridd.

Yummy home made cakes on offer at a special Coffee Morning at Rhydyfelin Library.
